New Delhi 1st Feb:Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father Prasad Gallela of the clergy of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh as the Bishop of Cuddapah diocese.

The announcement was made on Jan. 31, in Rome, corresponding to Indian time at 4.30 PM.

Fr. Prasad Gallela has been a spiritual director and professor of philosophy at St. John's Regional Seminary in Kondadaba, Visakhapatnam.

The Diocese of Cuddapah was erected by Pope Paul VI on October 28, 1976 and it comprises the civil districts of Cuddapah and Chittoor.

Cuddapah diocese has a Catholics population of 81,580, with 104 priests and 355 religious.

Former Bishop M. D. Prakasam was transferred to the neighbouring diocese of Nellore.

The Bishop-elect was born in Adoni, in Andhra Pradesh in 1962 and ordained a priest in 1989.
