The NSS unit of Mangalore University and St. Raymond’s College, Vamanjoor jointly organized a training programme on Environment and Watershed Management on the occasion of NSS Annual Special Camp at Rosa Mystica High School, Kinnikambla on December 30, 2009.

The resource person Rev. Dr Ronald Cutinha, director of Samanvaya provided the statistical data of Global Warming and future projection of the same.  The over use and wrong use of natural resources are the main reasons for the depletion of potable water in the earth. The water is contaminated and has become scarce, air is polluted, fertile soil has become the bed of rivers and chemical pesticides and fertilizers have ruined the soil bacteria and worms. Ozone layer is depleting, plastic toxic has polluted air while burning, resulted dangerous to fish in sea and caused hazards while in the soil, blocking the water from penetrating the earth.  “Global Warming is the future manmade hazard. Due to the constant attacks of humans on the environment of planet earth, environment is loosing its balance. A comprehensive plan and serious action to fight against Global Warming and conservation of water alone can save this planet” he said.

The PowerPoint presentation on LCD made the learning easy.  Slides showing the preparation of soak pits, collection of roof water, construction of bunds and vented dams and of different models of rainwater harvesting helped the participants understand water conservation methods fully. The slogans on Environment protection as well as watershed management and the question-answer session made the training lively.

The NSS programme officer of St. Raymond’s P.U. College Mr Harish K. welcomed and introduced the resource person. Priya proposed vote of thanks. The principal of St. Raymond’s College Sr Cecilia Mendonca was present on this occasion. Nearly 70 students benefited from this training.
