Mangalore: Ms.Ratna Mukherjee, the Cultural Affairs and Exchanges advisor and Mr. Jagadish K. the Director of the  American Library, US Consulate, Chennai visited the Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management for an interaction with the staff and the students of the Sahyadri Educational Institutions on Thursday, 25th February, 2010. The purpose of the visit was to interact about the higher education in the US, the exchange programmes and the American Library Assistance.

Speaking to the audience, Ms. Ratna Mukherjee said that the Higher Education in America works differently from the systems practiced in other countries. The United States has a highly decentralized system that gives students a wide range of educational options from the large universities to community colleges, also to the vocational and technical schools. The colleges and universities are mostly self-governing and have significant independence.

Mr. Jagadish K. briefed about the American Library and its facilities. He said that the American Library carries out a variety of activities aimed at promoting a better understanding of the policies, values, institutions and culture of the United States. In addition it has access to more than 10000 titles on CD-ROM and through on-line databases.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman of the Bhandary Foundation who is also a recipient of several fellowships including Eisenhower Fellowship awarded by the Eisenhower Foundation, Philadelphia, USA, shared his experience about the selection process for the fellowship. He also added that the selection procedure is not an easy one. He continued to share that the Youth Exchange programme that he participated in the US inspired him to start the Educational institutions.

Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, the Principal and the Director of the Sahyadri College of Engineering & management was also present on this occasion. The students and the faculty members of the Sahyadri Educational Institutions had a very good interaction with the delegates. A session of interaction with the student leaders followed the programme.
