Press Release:

Mangalore: Fr Dolphy M. Monteiro (45 years), a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore died of bike accident on the 18th of August at around 10 a.m. in Paladka, 40 KMs away from Mangalore city in South Kanara.  His funeral would take place on 20th of August at 10 a.m. on Friday in St Ignatius Loyola Church, Paladka. The public viewing of the diseased priest could be done on the same day from 8 a.m. onwards.

From the Church sources it has been reported that Fr Monteiro, the newly appointed Parish Priest of St Ignatius Loyola Church, Paladka belonging to the Diocese of Mangalore was traveling  towards Mangalore in his newly purchased bike towards Mangalore to do the formalities of the registration of the said bike.

Just after moving a kilometer on the village road from the Church which would join the main road leading to Mangalore city, there was cow dung on the road. It has been understood that to escape the ride  on the dung, the bike rider has tried to control the vehicle by a sudden break.  This has led to the skidding  of the vehicle and the rider has fallen into the well which was very next to the road.  This has led to the death of the priest.

As soon as the news was heard about the sad incident, Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza , the Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore has visited the spot and the Church together with Fr William Menezes, the Public Relations Officer of the Diocese of Mangalore.

The bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore has expressed his deep sorrow at the sad demise. With deep sadness he also recalls the sudden death of another active  priest of the Diocese, Fr Vincent Martis by a road accident in early February this year during his private visit to Rajasthan.

When asked about the sudden death, Fr William Menezes, the PRO,  feels that that  the present geographical context of the fall presents itself as risky one. Fr Joseph Martis, the present Rector of St Joseph’s Seminary is of the opinion that he is a simple, duty conscious priest with very few words.

Mr Vincent Sequeira, the present Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council of St Ignatius Church, feels that they had received a Parish Priest whom people were really in need, a priest with discipline and right planning, a priest who is a real animator of the Church and Parish.  The whole Parish  mourns his death according to him.

Fr Monteiro is the son of Late  Joseph M. Montiero and Ephrosine Alice Rodrigues of Bantwal Parish.  Two of his sisters are  members of two different women religious Congregations.

He was born on 17.6.1965 and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mangalore on 09-05-1992 after his priestly formation in St Peter’s Seminary, Bangalore. After being Assistant Pastor at Kinnigoly, Milagres-Mangalore and Belman parishes he was the parish priest of Narampady Parish in Kasaragod District in Kerala State. From 2002 to 2008 he was the Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Church, Jeppu-Mangalore and also the Financial Administrator of St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary, Mangalore. After a break of pastoral experience in United States of America for two years, he was given the present office in the last week of May this year.
