Pune:Approximately 20,000 Christians took part in a Peace March in the city of Pune to dissent the violence against Christians in the Khandamal district of Orissa, on Jan. 21.

Later on, leaders presented a memorandum to the District Collector who assured to route the same to the concerned authorities.

Bishop of Pune Valerian D’Souza and Bishop of Church of North India Vijay Sathe, presented another memorandum to Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, the Member of Parliament, who promised to take the protest and hurt feelings of Pune Christian to the highest authority in Delhi

The Peace March was flagged off by Bishop Valerian D’Souza at 3.45 p.m. on Monday, January 21. It was led by Bishop Sathe, Mr. Diago Almeida, the President of Poona Catholic Association, Mr. John Paul, former Municipal Corporator, along with hundreds of priests, religious, seminarians and thousands of Christians.

During the rally, the protesters were singing peace songs, reciting prayers and walking silently, carrying white flags, roses, banners with slogans in Marathi, Hindi and English.

The protest rally which began at Y.M.C.A. campus, after taking the 8 kms route on the main roads of Pune, reached the Church of Immaculate Conception at 5.45 p.m.

Then a public meeting was held on the grounds of Immaculate Conception Church, where the local M.L.A.s Mr. Balasaheb Shivarkar and Mr. Chhajed along with many other dignitaries joined in protesting the pre-meditated and planned atrocities on the innocent Christians in Orissa.

Rendering support to the victims of Orissa, the crowd pledged to pray for those who persecute the innocent people in Orissa and other parts of our country. The protest memorandum was read by Bishop Valerian in English and by Bishop Sathe in Marathi.

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi lauding the presence of a huge crowd, praised the Christians for their great contribution in the development of our nation.

He said that the Central Government is committed to protect the minorities and if the State has failed then we will take the matter to the highest level and act promptly.
