Mumbai :In a ghastly case of corporal punishment being used in a school, an eight-year-old school boy, Paramjeet Singh Alag, fractured his left knee when his class teacher pushed him into a bench on Wednesday. His parents have lodged an FIR against the teacher with the Antop Hill police station, who was arrested and subsequently let off on bail.

Paramjeet, a class three student of Gurunanak High School at Antop Hill, Bandra, was caught talking while the math class was on. His teacher Indu Naik first scolded him, then grabbed a handful of his hair and pushed him hard. Paramjeet lost his balance and banged his knee forcefully on the bench, resulting in a fracture.

He experienced severe pain in his knee afterwards, and by the time the last bell went, he could barely walk. “It usually takes me 10 minutes to walk home, but my knee had swollen so badly that I could not walk,” said Paramjeet.

On reaching home, he narrated the incident to his mother, Satnam Kaur. She rushed him to a doctor, where X-rays revealed that he had suffered a fracture on the left knee.

Manjeet Singh, Paramjeet’s father, then visited the school and met the principal, B K Kundal, “The principal assured me that she would investigate the matter and get back to us,” said Singh. However, later, she ‘got back’ only to inform the family that no such incident had taken place place at school and that the boy must have fallen down and hurt himself outside the school premises.

Singh is, naturally, upset at the turn of events. He said, “The school authorities have proved themselves completely irresponsible. Even after my son was seriously hurt in the classroom, no one cared. I have mentioned in my FIR that the fracture has been caused by his teacher pushing him. I am hurt as the school never bothered to find out about my son’s condition after the incident. That’s why I lodged the FIR.”

Senior police inspector Vishnu Deokar of Antop Hill police station confirmed that an FIR had been lodged. He said, “After the statement of the complainant was recorded, the teacher was arrested under IPC 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act or endangering the life or personal safety of others). Later, she was released on a bail of Rs 3,000. We are investigating the matter and a charge sheet will soon be filed against the teacher.”

When we contacted Indu Naik, Paramjeet’s class teacher, she said, “No such incident took place in the classroom. The student is trying to frame me, I have been in this profession for the past 15 years and until today, there has been no complaint against me.”
