I appreciate this article by the Editor of Dirvem, Mr. John Monis, very much throwing light of the protests by Catholics of different parishes of Mangalore in the correct perspective. Since Kulshekar(Editor's parish) was one of the epicenters of disturbances ostensibly orchestrated by the Church priests and gurkars, so to say, without thinking of the consequences was like adding oil to the fire which resulted in un-necessary conflagration to bring avoidable suffering to our Catholic bretheren in and around Mangalore. If our Church leaders had been wise enough, they could have helped the police nab the culprits and punish them rather than provoking the police to retaliate against them and helping the culprits to go scot-free. Over here, the Catholic volunteers were made to suffer by not guiding them properly. In the first place, there was no need to provoke/whip mass hysteria without guaging properly the attacks on our places of worship and planning how to counter this effectively. Now, I am sure, they must have realised their mistakes and hopefully they will take care not to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere by their being a contributory factor along with the miscreants in future. We must regret these incidents and my sympathies are with those who had to undergo un-necessary suffering. John Pereira, Mumbai/Mangalore

Thank you for a thought provoking write up. Please make sure that this article is read by our Man Friday. I am sorry I cant write the response in Kannada script here, though I know it very well. Every word uttered by you is absolutely correct and represents the vast number of Christians in Mangalore. Let us also not leave out other denominations of Christians in any negotiations for peace with the fundamentalists. Perhaps, New Life people are doing what our catholic priests are not doing! that is, spreading of Christ's message! Our Bishop and the priests may be trying to live 'peacefully' without bothering about why we are Christians first!
