Taxi from Carlisle Train Station – History
Carlisle Railway Station – sometimes referred to as Carlisle Citadel Station due to its proximity to the Citadel Buildings, is now the main railway hub for the city. The station building was built in 1847 and was designed by William Tite in the neo-Tudor style. When it opened it was one of several stations in Carlisle, with the Maryport & Carlisle Railway Station located in Crown Street and the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway Station to be found on London Road. By 1851, the Citadel Station had become the main station in the town.
Between 1875 and 1876, the station was expanded and extended to accommodate the new Midland Railway. It also became the northern terminus of the Settle & Carlisle Railway. Later in the 1960s, the railways were undergoing significant changes and the Beeching Axe meant that many railway lines were closed. These included the line that connected the town to Silloth and the Waverley Route, which connected Edinburgh via Galashiels to Carlisle.
