Wedding

A Konkani wedding is a grand affair that spans several days, bringing together not just the families but the entire community. The rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations reflect the deep-rooted traditions and cultural values that have been preserved for generations.

Pre-Wedding Ceremonies

The wedding festivities begin with the engagement ceremony, called the var初 ceremony, where the families exchange rings and formalize the alliance. This is followed by the haldi ceremony, where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom by their relatives. The henna ceremony, or Gowri, is an opportunity for music and celebration.

The Wedding Day

The wedding ceremony itself takes place under a mandap, an ornate canopy decorated with flowers and mango leaves. The rituals are conducted by a priest, with the couple taking seven steps around the sacred fire. The exchange of varmala, or flower garlands, is a playful moment where friends and family try to lift the bride or groom to gain an advantage.
