Legends

The Konkan coast is rich in folklore and legends that have been passed down through generations. These stories of heroes, spirits, and supernatural beings form an integral part of the cultural fabric, explaining natural phenomena and teaching moral lessons through entertaining narratives.

The Legend of Lord Parashurama

According to legend, Lord Parashurama, an avatar of Vishnu, reclaimed the Konkan land from the sea. It is said that he threw his axe into the Arabian Sea, and the waters receded, creating the fertile coastal strip. The region is therefore known as Parashurama Kshetra, and numerous temples and sacred sites are associated with this legend.

Spirit Legends

Local folklore is populated with stories of spirits and supernatural beings. The MaitriGan, friendly spirits who help villagers, contrast with the demonic entities that cause mischief. These stories serve to explain unexplained sounds in the night and the workings of a world beyond human perception.
