The Alphonso mango, known as the King of Mangoes, finds its spiritual home in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The unique combination of coastal climate, laterite soil, and traditional cultivation practices gives Konkan Alphonso its distinctive flavor and aroma that mango lovers cherish worldwide.
Ratnagiri: The Mango Heartland
The districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are the heartland of Alphonso mango cultivation. The towns of Ratnagiri, Devgad, and Sawantwadi are particularly renowned for their Alphonso orchards. The river valleys and hillside slopes provide the perfect microclimate for these trees.
The Alphonso season runs from April to June, with the best fruit typically harvested in May. During these months, the entire region smells of ripe mangoes, and the markets overflow with this golden fruit. Families who own mango orchards take great pride in their trees, some of which are over a hundred years old.
